- The annual Hudson Mohawk Valley Area Mathematics Conference (HMVAMC) is being hosted by ColumbiaHigh School for the first time in the 49-year history of the conference. Over 400 middle and high school mathematics and elementary school teachers from the area are expected to attend. The conference will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2008. It is a wonderful opportunity for teachers to share ideas about the teaching and learning of mathematics, keep up to date with NYS Standards, and learn how to better integrate technology into the classroom.

Pi Day: March 14, 2007
|
- Approximately 50 Columbia High School students, grades 9 – 12, participate in the NYS Math League contests. There are a series of six contests each school year where students are challenged to use their problem-solving and mathematical abilities to answer 6 questions, which cover a variety of math topics. The top 5 scores from each contest are sent in to the NYS Math League and compared to scores from schools all around New York State.
- Each year on March 14th, the Columbia High School Mathematics Department participates in our Annual Pi Day Celebration. Teachers wear shirts, jewelry, and other pi related accessories and encourage the students to do so as well. In our classrooms, we encourage the students to bring pi related foods, songs, poems, clothing, etc., to celebrate one of the world’s most important numbers!! Many teachers use activities related to pi to emphasize its importance in our everyday lives.
- The Masterminds club was formed last year and is a group of students that participate in trivia contests throughout the year. These students travel to other schools to compete with other schools’ students to see who has the most knowledge about topics such as literature, history, science, pop culture, and mathematics. Two of the mathematics department teachers are the advisors of the club, which is an undefeated 4-0 so far this year.
- For the past two years, a select group of Columbia High School students have been participating in the Annual Computer Programming Contest at Siena College. This contest takes high school students from around the capital region and challenges them to solve problems using computer programming. It is a unique opportunity for our computer programming students to put their skills to use and to network with other high school students with the same interests and with college students and professors in the computer science field.
