PROGRAMS THAT REFLECT THE MISSION AND VALUES OF COLUMBIA HIGH SCHOOL

Academic Programs: A well rounded program that emphasizes the acquisition of advanced skills, remediation of special needs enrichment programs extending the basic curriculum and gifted program activities, are all key components.

Advanced Study Programs: We have Advanced Placement programs sponsored by the College Board (10 subject areas). We have articulation agreements with local colleges and universities (SUNY, Albany, Oswego and HVCC, Schenectady Community College).

Allied Arts Programs: Students have the opportunity to develop their strengths and talents in the areas of art, music, physical education, home economics and technology. Our award winning co-curricular and extra-curricular programs emphasize broad student participation that enables every student a chance to participate in their area of interest. Student behavior and citizenship is guided by our clubs and activities Code of Conduct.

Alumni Hall of Fames: Columbia High School continues to recognize alumni with the creation of two Hall of Fames. The Columbia High School Alumni Hall of Fame was established in 1994, by the District's Education Foundation, to recognize and reinforce the efforts of CHS graduates as well as make them role models for current students. The Columbia High School Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 2002, by Columbia's All Sports Booster Club, and honors former CHS coaches and athletes. Additional information on both Hall of Fames, as well as nomination applications, may be obtained at Columbia High School.

Community and Parent Involvement: Parents are active members of our school improvement committee and participate in our summer planning retreat. Parents meet with teachers, students and administrators monthly as part of our school climate committee to discuss issues that affect our learning community. Our PTSO meets monthly and supports student programs. Being responsive to the community allows us to reach our goals, and helps us to become accountable and ensure our success.

Interscholastic Athletics: Columbia High School supports 25 athletic programs and levels that range from modified to varsity. Over 80% of the student body participates in some level of Columbia athletics. Columbia has a rich tradition of athletic excellence; state champions have been crowned in baseball, softball and girls bowling. Our wrestling, track and tennis programs have produced individual state champions. Columbia High School is one of the few schools who provides a certified Weight Training Program which culminates with a Drug Free Lift Off. Many of our athletes have continued on with their athletic and academic careers at high profile colleges around the nation; several receiving athletic scholarships.

Orientation Programs: Programs that help students and parents function in new situations are critical to the success of our programs. We offer orientation programs in the following areas: 8th to 9th Grade Parent Conferences, 9th Grade Orientation Day (summer), Guidance Information Night, Alumni Reception, Financial Aid Night, Junior/Senior Planning Conferences for Post High School planning.

Positive Recognition Philosophy Character Education: Columbia High School recognizes students each month for improvement, citizenship and academics with our "student of the month program". Students are recognized for academics and attendance each quarter with discount cards from local vendors. Our Principals Honor roll ceremony is held each marking period to recognize the top 5% of each class. Our character education program is a year long effort that rewards positive student growth so that positive behavior and attitudes are fostered. There is an end of the year awards program for students and parents.

Student Organizations: Our clubs and organizations offer students the opportunity to explore, expand and develop new interests while providing application of social and group skills. These activities develop a sense of belonging and foster positive attitudes about school. We offer the following clubs/activities: Amnesty International, Art Club, Chamber Singers, Chorus, Columbia Audio Visual, Columbia Dramatic Play (Fall), Columbia Players (Spring), Columbian Yearbook, Columbian Financial Advisor, Community Action Club, Concert Band, Computer Club, Devils Advocate, Ethnic Student Coalition, Future Business Leaders of America, German Club, Honor Society, Interact, Jazz Ensemble, Key Club, Labyrinth, Mock Trial Team, Model Congress, Orchestra, Peer Leadership, Science Olympiad, Shakespeare Celebration, Student Council, Students Against Driving Drunk and Wind Ensemble/Symphonic Band.

Teacher Advisor Program (STEPS): A program that builds students social skills, develops a sense of belonging, teaches group skills, and encourages self respect and appreciation for others. Faculty members are paired with students who serve as their advocate throughout the school year.

Teacher Support Groups: Teachers and staff are actively involved with their colleagues in planning instruction and improving teaching methods. The district offers staff a wide range of professional development opportunities for individual growth and personal development.
