HISTORY OF DONALD P. SUTHERLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

In 1809, the first school in Nassau was organized. In 1821, a school house was built on Chatham Street; Grades 1-8 shared four classrooms. In good weather, students would parade outside during recess to marches played from a Victrola. In 1936, the Village Board voted to build a new school. On October 28, 1939, the cornerstone was laid for the Nassau School, later to be known as the Donald P. Sutherland School, named for a long-time principal.
