Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

I would like to start this month’s newsletter by wishing all of our DPS moms an early “Happy Mother’s Day”.

Through the month of April, our students have been acknowledged for over 2,000 Random Acts of Kindness. That is 200 more than a year ago.  On Friday, April 25th, our school celebrated Arbor Day by planting our Random Act of Kindness Tree. Prior to our April vacation, students voted on several hardwood trees.  The boys and girls also voted on the location of our tree.  After the vote, it was determined that we would donate a Flower Pear Tree to the Nassau Village Commons. The tree was planted next to the park bench along the walkway. Our entire school community will be able to enjoy this tree for many years to come!

Many thanks go out to our PTO and parent volunteers during the month of April.  We had several successful events that generated great excitement amongst our entire school community.  Once again, the Children’s Fair was a big hit!  Students and their families enjoyed spending a beautiful Saturday morning and afternoon at this well attended event.  Also, many of our students participated in our Art and Science Fair.  The students’ projects and presentations were well done.  Special guest Meteorologist Paul Caiano from WNYT News Channel 13 stopped by to check out all of the projects.  He was impressed by the number of participants and the effort that was placed into each project.

As our school year begins to wind down, we have a great number of programs for students and families to enjoy.

Our East Greenbush Central School District Budget Vote will take place on Tuesday, May 20th at the Donald P. Sutherland School.  During this evening, our 5th grade students will present their state reports in the gymnasium as well as our 4th grade chorus will be performing in the cafeteria.   We will also host our second annual school wide student vote. The boys and girls will have the chance to vote on a school mascot.  With the assistance of Village Clerk Mrs. Van Deusen, we obtained a voting booth for the students to vote.  This will not take place as a part of the regular school day.  It will be a part of our evening events.  Possible mascots will be revealed at an upcoming school assembly and further information regarding the process will be sent home closer to the voting date.  Please join us for this event and I encourage you to vote on the budget.  If you need to register for voting, please feel free to stop by DPS on Wednesday May 7th between 4-8 p.m. to complete the appropriate paperwork.

On May 9th, we will be celebrating Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day.  This will take place from 12:45-3:00.  As grandparents or friends arrive, we ask that they check in at the main door where they will receive a classroom schedule for the student(s) they are visiting.  During this time, hands-on classroom activities will be planned as well as a ventriloquist performance by Sylvia Markson.  This will take place in our gymnasium.  We ask that students stay in their classrooms during this day and are not brought to other classrooms or walking through the halls.  This will help us cut down on congestion and will allow you to see some of the wonderful activities that take place in your children’s classroom.

I look forward to seeing you at our end of the year events and I hope you enjoy your month of May.

Sincerely,

Mr. Alvey
