Have a nice summer!

June 10, 2010

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

As the end of the school year winds down, I wanted to take the opportunity to share with you the tentative outlook for our school during the 2010-2011 school year.  If grade level enrollments stay the same we are slated to have the following grade configurations:

  1. Three Kindergarten Sections
  2. Three First Grade Sections
  3. Two Second Grade Sections
  4. One Second and Third Grade Combination Class
  5. Two Third Grade Sections
  6. Two Fourth Grade Sections
  7. One Fifth Grade Section
  8. One Fourth and Fifth Grade Combination Class

During the summer, we often have students moving into and out of our school vicinity. These changes will have an impact on our overall grade level configurations for our entire school and adjustments will need to be made.  I will monitor this very closely during the children’s summer vacation.

Over the last several years, our school district has placed the student’s tentative teacher on their last report card.  It was determined that we would not complete this procedure at the end of this school year.  This is due to the reasons stated above as well as the possibility of our school district accepting the New York State early retirement incentive legislation.  Acceptance of the early retirement incentive will have an impact on the instructional personnel of our entire school district that could create potential staffing shifts in all of the buildings.  Therefore, we will mail you your child’s teacher assignment in the middle of August.

I want to thank you for your continued support of our school and appreciate your understanding during these challenging times we are all facing.  I look forward to working with you during the 2010-2011 school year.

Fondly,

Jack Alvey

Random Acts of Kindness (RAK)

The students of the Donald P. Sutherland School are recognized on a daily basis for the positive acts of kindness they exhibit.  Staff members recognize students when they exhibit a random act of kindness towards another person.  Staff members document these on a certificate.  During morning announcements, we recognize the students and place their certificate on our Random Act of Kindness Tree that is located in our cafeteria.  Last year, we set a goal of achieving 1,500 RAK.  Our students were recognized for being kind over 2,000 times!    For reaching our goal, we planted a Flowering Pear tree at the Village of Nassau Commons.  On Arbor Day, We had a school-wide walking field trip to the commons.  For the 2009-2010 school year we have established a new goal for our students to achieve: 1,600 Random Acts of Kindness prior to Arbor Day 2010!
