NYS 3 APPLES BOOK AWARD

Dear Parents/guardians:

The 3 Apples Book Award is a joint program of the Youth Services (YSS) and School Library Media (SLMS) Sections of the New York Library Association (NYLA).

Attached are the most popular books nominated by children of New York State including our children at Genet and DPS.

In order to be eligible to vote, the children will have had to have read 3 of the books. Please consider reading aloud one or more of the choices between now and April so they will be able to vote.

The books will be displayed in our school library and if time allows during scheduled classes excerpts will be read. The books are also available through the Upper Hudson Library System and could be checked out at your local public library.

Reading aloud to your child is a great way to spend quality time with him or her. Every child likes to be read aloud to at any age level.

You will notice that many of the books nominated are currently or will be movies. Your child may know the movie version but why not share with them the book from which that movie was created? Many times the book is so much more thought provoking and has a much deeper storyline. Not to mention it enriches your child's imagination.

The winners will be announced in May and we will have a mini-celebration in honor of the winners.

Thanks for your help and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at the school.

INFORMATION ABOUT OUR LIBRARY

All elementary school media centers in East Greenbush Central Schools have been automated.   This means the students and faculty search on a computer for their book selection rather than through a catalog of cards. We are now like the East Greenbush Community Library and the Nassau Free Library.

At the beginning of the year the students were taught the new check-out procedure and re-introduced to the automated catalog.

THE IMPORTANCE OF READING TO YOUR CHILD

"The more you read, the more you know."

It is very important to read or listen to your child read at any age.  Set a good example and read yourself.  Encourage your children to read by making sure they have a public library card. It is free and one of the most valuable items you can give your children.

Turn off the video games and television on occasion and share an hour or two of reading aloud.  This can be done at any age.  We all love to be read to from infant to 99 years.

We always welcome readers from the community.  If you are interested in spending some time sharing your love of reading with the students please feel free to call and ask us.

If you can offer your services during the school day, please call Deborah Lyman, or Marilyn DeJulio at the DPS Media Center.  The number is 766-3888.

Thank you, ahead of time, for sharing your love of reading.
