PRINCIPAL'S CORNER Dear Parents/Guardians, Hopefully, the winter weather is behind us and we can start transitioning into spring. We had a bad stretch at the end of February. It was some of the heaviest snow I’ve seen in a long time. The snow however worked in perfectly with the atmosphere for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. I hope you and your children had the opportunity to enjoy them as much as I did. It was great to see our country do so well in so many events. I am of course partial to ice hockey. The gold medal game was one of the most competitive and intense games that I have ever seen. It was unfortunate that the U.S. came out on the short of the game. But, wow! During the month of March, we have several events planned for our students. The PTO has once again supported a visiting author to our school. Jennifer Armstrong a local children’s author will do a presentation for all of our students and will also do a book signing. Our third and fourth graders will attend a performance at Columbia High School featuring violinist Mark Wood of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra while our fifth grade strings students participate in workshops that he will lead. Also, we have our annual Children’s Fair (Saturday, March 20th) and Talent Show (Friday, March 26th). I look forward to seeing everyone at these events. They truly showcase the “Spirit” of our school. We are very fortunate that Mrs. Flynn, Mrs. Gardinier, and Mrs. Schermerhorn’s classes will have new Promethean boards installed in their classrooms. Our school district was able to obtain federal grant money to purchase this great instructional tool. Just a reminder, our marking period comes to an end on Friday, March 12th. Report cards and new verification sheets will be distributed on Wednesday, March 17th. It is of great importance that you go over the information on the verification sheets and update all changes (phones, address, emergency dismissal, email address, etc) please sign, date and return to us as soon as possible. There is a half-day scheduled for Thursday, March 18th for parent-teacher conferences. If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher, please schedule a time for that afternoon. Congratulations to our Odyssey of the Mind teams! One of our fourth grade teams brought home a gold medal while another received a bronze medal. A third team earned the top score in their division for spontaneous problem solving. Here are a few events that are happening at DPS in the month of March: March Events: 4th: Guest Author: Jennifer Armstrong Have a great month of March and let’s hope for an early spring! Fondly, Mr. Alvey |
