Citizen Genet
By Alex, Hayley, Rachel and Efrain

Citizen Genet's full name was Citizen Edmond Charles Edouard Genet. He was born on
January 3, 1763 in Versailles, France. He died 71 years later on July 14, 1834,which is Bastille Day in his beloved France. He is buried behind the East Greenbush Reformed Church. Here is a picture of Citizen Genet's home town.

When the United States had the American Revolution, France brought over some of their best soldiers to fight. One of them was named Edmond Genet. He helped the United States win the American Revolution. Some time after that France had its own revolution. France sent over Edmond Genet to ask the United States for some money to get some weapons to fight. But they said no and if he went back to France he would be hanged. While the United States was having their revolution Genet asked George Washington if the United States would trade with France like they were doing with England. But Washington said he didn't want to cooperate with them. That is why Genet didn't like George Washington.

In 1794, he wed Cornelia Tappan Clinton, who was the daughter of New York's First Governor. In 1810, she died. In 1818, Citizen Genet wed Martha Brandon Osgood,  daughter of the Nations First Postmaster General.

Genet the Farmer and Inventor

Genet settled in East Greenbush in an estate he called Prospect Hill. It overlooked the Hudson River and was located on Hayes Road.

He was very interested in science. He wrote a book about inventions. His most famous invention was an aeronaut. It was a gas-filled dirigible that was suppossed to run by horse-powered air paddles.

Before Citizen Genet School was named Citizen Genet School, it was named Columbia School. When the new high school was built, they took the name Columbia. The School needed a new name. They had a contest and put a bunch of names into a hat. Citizen Genet's name was picked out of the hat. That is how we came to be Citizen Genet School.
