Memorable People and Events

By: Hannah, Trent & Steven

Hello, welcome to our section of the Genet History project called "Memorable people and events".

Our section of the website is mainly about historical events that happened in the history of Genet.  All our information comes from people and resources that were there during the time of Genet.

From our resources we have gained an interest in our topic. We have learned a lot and are glad we did this project.

In the beginning Genet was Kindergarten through 12th grade. Mr. Dick Doran was in the first class to go 9th through 12th grade in Genet and graduate. In the late 1950's, Genet was changed from Kindergarten to twelfth, to 7th through 12th. That is not all the changes that happened at Genet. Genet went from kindergarten through 12th to 7th through 12th, 5th and 6th and then kindergarten through 5th. We are now an elementary school.  This happened in September of 1999.

Ernie Stautner finished high school and in about 2 years started playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After playing for about 15 years he started coaching for the Dallas Cowboys. He retired from coaching and is now living in Texas. We are in the process of updating our information about Ernie Stautner.

At the old Columbia (Genet) there was a conflict about whether they should change the Columbian mascot (a devil). The conflict was of a religious nature. People thought that the old devil looked too much like the real devil (satan). As compromise the devil was left as the mascot but it was redesigned to a more whimsical devil.

There was a circus in 1943. Elephants, tigers, and bears marched in with pride and respect and two people from each grade got to ride on the elephant. They had to take out doors for the elephant to get through. The janitor did not like that very much for obvious reasons. People were very nervous about having big elephants and big cats with claws marching all around the new gym floor that they had just spent thousands and thousands of dollars on. Mr. Doran, a star helper at Genet says "The gym with the circus was a marvelous site!"

In the late 1940's there was a fire at Edgewood dance club. They think to this day that it was started in the underground room with the boiler, etc. After the fire people came to take whisky, wine, beer and other liquors. It had famous musicians come there like Freddy Martin, Dorsy Brothers. People would come and drink whisky, wine, beer and other liquors. Today a Mount Vernon Motel sits where Edgewood used to be.

In the beginning of Genet, calculators were not a big thing back then. In Genet there was a big conflict between the parents and the teachers over the use of calculators in school. They decided that yes they should use calculators.

Thanks for visiting our website, come back again!
