NATURE'S CLASSROOM

August 1, 2008

Dear sixth grade parents, guardians and students:

The East Greenbush Central School District will once again be offering the Nature’s Classroom program to all of our sixth grade students.  This year Nature’s Classroom will again take place in the fall from October 28 – October 31.  Last year this opportunity presented us with a different approach to the program.  Instead of an end of the year educational experience and celebration, Nature’s Classroom in the fall allowed the students to experience team building in addition to the outdoor education.  The activities at Nature’s Classroom lent themselves to team building.  Students, coming from five different elementary schools, had the chance to work together and get to know their new teammates and teachers.

Transitioning from elementary school to middle school may offer many challenges.  Middle school students are looking to fit in, to find their niche, and to make new friends on a team of 125 children.  The friends they make the first few months may become friends for their entire three years at Goff, and sometime beyond.  Offering Nature’s Classroom at the end of the first quarter presents tremendous opportunities to help our sixth grade students make a successful adjustment to middle school.

Students attending Nature’s Classroom will experience nature-themed classes, hiking and other outdoor activities, with team building throughout.  Students choosing to remain at Goff will attend their regular classes with some team building activities included in the daily routine.

This year’s Nature’s Classroom Program will run from Tuesday, October 28 through Friday, October 31.  Since Friday is Halloween, we will be back at Goff in time to enjoy their Trick-or-Treating.

Nature’s Classroom will be held at the YMCA facilities at Silver Bay on Lake George.  The cost of the trip is $235.00.  Proceeds from the first sixth grade activity night on Friday, September 26 will be used to defray the cost of every child attending.  This activity night is in lieu of any kind of sales fundraiser, so parents and children will not need to fundraise individually.  The first deposit of $100.00 is due no later then Friday, October 3.  You may pay the full amount on that date or the balance no later than Friday, October 17.  Scholarships may be available based on need.  Financial assistance may also be applied for through the Silver Bay Association.  Application forms are attached. Applications must be received by the Silver Bay Association by September 26 to be considered.    If you receive any assistance, you will be asked to provide proof of that so we can deduct that from your final bill.  We are hoping everyone will choose to attend.

Attached is the registration form and health forms.  These will also be available in the fall.  All students attending Nature’s Classroom must submit their registration form and two of the health forms labeled (REQUIRED) by October 3.  Any students needing to use any self-carry medicine or any prescription medicines must also submit either or both of the other two medical forms attached.  Your physician must sign all medical forms.  The medical forms will also be available on our website (http://goff.egcsd.org). Click on the Homework link.

In late September, there will be an informational night for parents in the Goff School Cafeteria presented by the Goff staff.  We will give an overview of the program and answer questions.  Goff staff attending Nature’s Classroom will also be present.

There will be a limited number of parent chaperone spots available.  Please don’t make this a condition of your child’s participation.  More information on Nature’s Classroom will be made available at our sixth grade Open House in September.

                                                                                    Sincerely,

                                                                                    Fran Pugliese – NCR Administrator

                                                                                    Brian Reeve – School Principal
