Selecting a Second Language
French
French in the language of love! Yes, that’s true, but it’s so much more. Did you know…
- France and Canada are world economic powers. Learning French will be an asset when doing business with these countries.
- France is a leader in technology. Knowing French will help with careers in medical research, aeronautics, telecommunications and engineering.
- French is the international language of diplomacy. It is one of two official languages of the United Nations, the Olympic Games and the International Red Cross.
- French is extremely useful for travel. France is a top tourist destination. French is also spoken in over 50 other countries around the world.
- Best of all, English speakers already know a lot of French. More than one third of all English words are derived from French.
German
Learning German is cool! Some people think that it is the hardest language to learn and not at all useful. Our German students know better:
- German and English are both Germanic languages. They both started out as basically the same language. They share many of the same words, word origins and grammar characteristics.
- German students have many opportunities in the business world and in areas of science. Germany has always been at the forefront of technological advancements and many new scientific discoveries happen in German-speaking countries and much scientific information is only available in German. Many universities encourage science majors to learn German.
- Learning German is also a wonderful opportunity for young people with relatives or ancestors from German-speaking countries to connect with their roots.
Spanish
Spanish is a valuable language to know. By the year 2050 it is projected that 25% of the United State population will be Spanish speaking. Our proximity to countries such a Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic allows for travel experiences and also develops cultural appreciation and awareness. Our Foreign Language teachers have used Spanish by: translating for a law firm, a hospital and a farm; making school-home visits (facilitating communication between school and parent); becoming a radio DJ; traveling/studying abroad. Living in a global economy, it is important for all students to have proficiency in a second language
