Mr. Ed Britt

When did you work here or go here as a student?

Before coming here in 1970, I taught in Long Island for 6 years.  I also taught at the Nassau School (DPS) for 2 years and at Genet for 6 years.  I also taught at Bell Top for 6 years.  There were 1025 students in the schools then.

When was the school built?

It was built 49 years ago, in 1955.

Was this school always K-5?

No, it was not always a K-5 school.  Before being a K-5 school, it was a K-6 school.  When the Clinton School closed, half of the students went to Red Mill or Green Meadow.

How was the school built?  What materials were used and why were they chosen?

The basic materials were cement, concrete, brick and the interiors were wood.  Every school was made out of brick.  Brick lasts longer and is not a fire hazard because it is non-flammable.  Also, there was a brick yard in Castleton.  It was there for 100 years.  It was close by so the school used bricks.

Were there more or less classrooms?

There were 1,025 kids at the school.  Music and art shared a room and band was on the stage.

Was there a playground?

There were tires and swing sets. Most of the playground was made of metal and concrete which was rough on the kids and not as safe.  The students played games like dodge ball and races during recess.  There was no 300 track.

How many principals were there and who were they?

Mrs. Bell was the first principal in 1955.  Mr. Britt came here 35 years ago in 1970.  There have been 5 principals at Green Meadow: Mrs. Bell, Mr, Britt, Mr. Craven, Mr. Schwarz and Mrs. Wagner.

What changes have you seen?

There are different electric systems and different plumbing.  The rooms were all the same as before.  The way kids and teachers learned together have changed.

Who are some of the people you remember?

Mrs. Kershaw, Mrs. Poole, Mrs. VanKampen, Mrs. Burgess, Mrs. Frederick, Mrs. Boucher, Mrs. Giuliani, Mr. C.
