Mrs. Mary Wagner

When was the school built?

The school was probably built in 1954 because it was opened on September 8, 1955.

How was the school built? What materials were used and why were they chosen?

The school was built using cement, cinder block and brick. Those materials were chosen because they met the school code.

How many grades were there originally? Was this school always K-5?

Green Meadow was originally a K-6 school but became a K-4 school before it became the K-5 school it is today. When it was a K-4 school, Genet housed grades 5 and 6 and Goff had grades 7 and 8. Genet was the first school originally and housed grades K-12.

Were there more or less classrooms in 1955?

There were less classrooms.

Was there a playground before the 2 previous ones that have been built?

Yes, there were a couple of swings, a metal jungle jim, a see-saw and sandbox.

How many classes were added?

4

How did the building change with the reconstruction?

From Mrs. Poole's room to the Main Office to the second part of the gym was the front of the school. The hallways stayed the same. A cafeteria and more classes were added. The kindergarten rooms are bigger than the regular classes because of law. Twelve rooms were redesigned, the third part of the gym and the new wing were added. The teachers changed classrooms in 1999. They only had to move once not 3 times.

How many principals have there been since Green Meadow opened, and who were they?

There have been 4 principals since Green Meadow opened. Mrs. Dorothy Bell was  the first principal and has since retired. Mr. Edward Britt was the second principal.  He went on to be superintendent before he retired. Mr. Schwarz was the fourth principal until he retired in 1955, when I became principal.

When did you begin to work at Green Meadow? Did you attend Green Meadow as a student or live here before the school was built?

I started working here on Labor Day, 1995. I didn't know where the school was when I interviewed. I had no keys so I looked in the windows. I had never seen tennis balls on the chairs before! I like being principal here. Before I became principal I was a principal in training and before that I was a music teacher.
