Introduction The Green Meadow Historical Archives are a compilation of photographs, documents and interviews to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Green Meadow Elementary School. The focus of this project was to make an on-line archive to be accessed by teachers, community members and students in order to make the history of Green Meadow come alive. In addition, the material collected became the basis for designing grade level appropriate CRQs/DBQs. Long before Green Meadow was dedicated in October 1955, the land on which it sits was the Miller family farm which dates back to the 1800's. There was no general school system in the state prior to the early 1800s. By the early 1850's, a series of one room schools had been established in what was to become the East Greenbush Central School District. A review of the maps in the Beers Atlas for the County of Rensselaer (1876) revealed the establishment of a number of school districts by that time. In 1914, two four-room schools were built, one in Clinton Heights and one in the village of East Greenbush. The one in the village was built on the main highway which was called "State Road". In 1972, it became known as the Edward W. Bates Memorial Community Building. Although the original school building in Clinton Heights burned, it was rebuilt and later became the East Greenbush Town Hall. Over the years, East Greenbush continued to grow and by the 1950s two more elementary schools were built, Red Mill in 1953 and Green Meadow in 1955.
